18 Jan

Eva, who was born in Oldham, studied at London’s Royal Academy of Music between 1911 and 1914. She began her career with the Carl Rosa Opera Company and steadily built up her repertoire to include leading roles such as Micaela in Carmen and the title roles in Aida, Tosca and Thais.

She formed an international reputation with her strong, steady and well-trained voice which was renowned for its clarion power in Italian and German operatic roles. Eva retired from the stage in 1948 and took up the post of visiting Professor of Voice at the University of Oklahoma, where she stayed for nine years. She returned to London in 1959 where she was appointed Professor of Singing at the Royal Academy of Music.

Eva was honoured by This Is Your Life a second time in 1983.
