MARJORIE LAWRENCE, Soprano, * 17 February 1909 Dean’s March bei Melbourne, † 13 January 1979 Little Rock (Arkansas);

She had her early training with Ivo Boustead in Melbourne and after travelling to Paris, with Cécile Gilly in Paris. She made her debut in 1932 at the Opera of Monte Carlo as Elisabeth in “Tannhäuser”. In 1933 Ortrud was the role that introduced her at the Paris Grand Opéra. That same year she appeared in the premiere of Canteloube’s “Vercingétorix”. Brünnhilde in “The Valkyrie” at the Metropolitan Opera in 1935. The great French roles, Brunehild in Reyer’s “Sigurd”, Salomé in “Hérodiade” Rachel, Thais, Valentine, and Gluck’s Alceste in addition to Donna Anna, Strauss’ Salome (in French, the recording of the final scene is stunning ), Sieglinde, Brangäne, Venus, Kundry, and Tosca. In 1941 she fell ill during a visit to Mexico City with poliomyelitis which led to paralysis of both legs . She famously sang Venus from a wheelchair at the Met, similarly Amneris in Paris.In 1947 she sang the title role in Richard Strauss’ “Elektra” in a concert version in Chicago. In 1952 she gave up her career. She first worked as a teacher at Tulane University, then at Southern Illinois University.
Records: In EJS she sings Brünnhilde in a recording of a performance of “Valkyrie” at the Metropolitan Opera in 1940, on melodrama Ortrud in “Lohengrin” (recording from the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires from 1936); RCA-Victor-plates also on HMV and Decca recordings (songs by Brahms, Grieg and Rachmaninoff, 1947).
